化學
化學，舊譯質學，格物質之性理，窮變化之機樞者也。[一]隸自然科學之林，居眾學之衝要；上承物理，下啟生物，故世號「中心之學」焉。[二]
蓋聞天地肇判，萬物以化而成；陰陽既分，百態因變而生。微則原子凝聚，著則分子離合；離子帶電而游，鍵維繫而固。構造殊則其性異，排列變則其態遷。及夫二質相值，舊鍵斷而新鍵結，故質散而新質凝——是謂反應，造化之妙運也。[三]草木榮枯，岩石凝結；臭氧化生，藥石奏效。小而刑偵之辨跡，大而星漢之析光——莫不資化學以為津梁焉。[四]
稽其名號，遠有所自。[五]西語chemistry者，蓋改煉金術（alchemy）之舊名。煉金之術，兼冶金與哲理，涉星象與玄學；志在點鉛成金，兼求不死之藥。[六]Alchemy導源阿拉伯語al-kīmīā（الکیمیاء），或溯古希臘語χημία，更遠紹埃及古名Kemet。[七]一說χημεία者，「鎔鑄合一」之謂也。[八]源流紛紜，莫衷一是。
溯夫太古，埃及鍊礦以提金，[九]巴比倫燒陶以製釉，天竺鑄器以染色[一〇]——技雖精矣，理未立也。逮乎古希臘，亞里斯多德定火氣土水四元之目，德謨克利特、伊比鳩魯倡原子之說，[一一]恩培多克勒著「無不能生有」之旨[一二]——然皆懸想以立言，未嘗試驗以徵實。[一三]
亞歷山大以降，煉金術興；融巫玄於格物，盛阿拉伯而被歐洲。[一四]伊本哈揚創品物分類之統，[一五]比魯尼、阿維森納闢金屬嬗變之妄。[一六]十六世紀，阿格里科拉著《論金屬》，盡斥玄虛，一歸實踐，世推「冶金之父」；[一七]又首削阿拉伯之冠詞，逕書chymia，斯學今名，實肇於此。[一八]
迨科學革命之興，波以耳著《化學質疑》；廢四元之陳說，立氣體定律之新規；擢煉金之方術，躋哲學之科條——化學卓然自立，自茲始也。[一九][二〇]厥後布萊克得二氧化碳，卡文迪許得氫；普利斯特里、舍勒異地同功，各取純氧。拉瓦節闡質量守恆之理，定物名釐正之規；猶牛頓之於物理，奠斯學於磐石——世稱「近世化學之父」焉。[二一][二二]
自是厥後，大明迭興，發現踵接。道耳頓立近世原子論；[二三]戴維以電析物，得新元素者九；門德列夫創週期表，預言未知元素者七；[二四]拉姆齊偕瑞利男爵獲貴氣體以補其闕。[二五]韋勒合成尿素，啟有機化學之戶牖；[二六]吉布斯、阿瑞尼士引熱力學，廓斯學之藩籬。及二十世紀之交，湯姆森得電子，居里夫婦究放射性；拉塞福以散射之驗，發原子之內構；哈恩得核分裂；鮑林、路易斯成化學鍵電子之論、分子軌域之說[二七]——由是原子內構大白，化學之理益精。
今則支流日繁，專域益廣。[二八]分析化學辨組成之品彙，有機化學專碳架之構變；無機化學窮金石之性理，物理化學究能量之動微；生物化學研生命之機樞，核化學探聚裂之奧窔；理論化學假量子力學，推分子之行止——交涉互成，日新月異。化學工業者，天下利源之钜擘也。二〇一三年，天下化工五十巨擘，歲入凡九千八百餘億美金，利什一有奇。[二九]
自太古之蒙昧，歷煉金之玄術；經科學之革命，臻量子之新紀。寸功積之，遂鑄萬世之業。上窮碧落之星辰，下極塵寰之纖微；探幽情於物質，究玄機於變化。合萬象於一理，通百化於一源。浩浩乎若河海之無涯，巍巍乎若崑崙之極天。此化學之所以為中心之學，歷千古而不磨者也。
