大堡礁

大堡礁，珊瑚礁也，舉世最大^[一]^[二]。在北澳大利亞昆士蘭外海。北起托雷斯海峽，南迄南回歸線表（約當南緯十度至二十四度），延袤約二千六百公里，最廣處一百六十有一公里。孤礁約二千九百^[三]，島嶼凡九百，星羅棋佈，形勝奇絕。南端去岸最遠，達二百四十有一公里；北端稍近，距岸僅十六公里。水落之際，礁出海面，遂成珊瑚之島。

雖處太虛，猶為可見，千載盛美。尋幽入微，可見珊瑚蟲無數，休養生聚，生機畢露。職是之故，列爲舉世之遺珍，定其領域，廣袤三十四萬八千平方公里^[四]，賴大堡礁海洋公園保護。

惟今世污染日甚，水質、候變、白化、長棘海星、捕魚過度、海難諸事，俱漸損其靈氣。
